Nvidia GeForce 840M Driver Issues…
Wed 6 May 2015
Wow… Seems like ages since I wrote anything on here.
In the time since my last post I bought a new laptop to replace my now ancient 2006 eMachines D620. After much consideration I went for the Dell Inspiron 17 3000 with a 5th gen Intel i5 and 8 GB of DDR 3 RAM. Also included with this machine is an Nvidia GeForce 840M. This card sports 2GB of DDR 3 RAM and is vastly superior to the in built Intel HD Graphics. However, when I set the Nvidia GPU as default, I began suffering constant BSODs with the error DRIVER_POWER_STATE_ERROR. As the card was the preferred GPU, this happened as soon as Windows booted and actually caused me to have to re-install the OS on a 2 day old laptop. I can only assume that the error was caused by a conflict with the touchpad driver as shortly before the BSOD the touchpad would fail.
On speaking to Dell tech support, the latest driver on the driver page for this particular model is 184.108.40.20624, A00. The same driver that was pre installed on my machine and seemed to be causing the issue. They did however manage to find this driver:
Provided by Nvidia themselves. Once installed, this driver fixed the issue (which did for some reason come back but a re-install of the same driver fixed it again) and has the GPU working fine. I am wary about setting it as default again so have set the preferred option to integrated and am using program overrides to select programs which should use the card.
I hope that at some point Dell will issue a patched driver or distribute the driver linked above as this is most certainly not an isolated issue (seriously, go Google it) and there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of information around about the problems. I did also read about the same issue on Asus machines but still no solution.
Hopefully this will help someone who is as frustrated as I was and at some point prompt Dell and Asus to update their drivers.
